What is a heat sink?

A Heat Sink, also known as a radiator or heat exchanger, is a component used to help electronic devices (such as CPUs, GPUs, etc.) dissipate heat. It is typically made of metal, such as copper or aluminum, because these materials have good thermal conductivity. When electronic components operate, they generate a large amount of heat. The heat sink absorbs this heat and, by increasing its surface area in contact with the air, facilitates faster dissipation of the heat into the surrounding environment, thereby keeping the electronic devices within a safe operating temperature range.

The design of a heat sink usually includes fin structures to increase the surface area and improve heat dissipation efficiency. Some advanced heat sinks are also equipped with fans to force airflow, further accelerating heat dissipation. In Computer hardware, the heat sink is a very important component that has a direct impact on system stability and performance.
