Shielding effect

Shielding is a method used in electrical engineering. To prevent external electric fields, magnetic fields, or electromagnetic fields from interfering with internal equipment, or to prevent the equipment's electromagnetic fields from affecting the external environment, the equipment is placed in an enclosed or nearly enclosed metal shell or metal mesh cover. This metal shell or mesh cover is called a shield. In structural chemistry, the term "shielding" is borrowed to name the following effect. The repulsion of inner electrons against outer electrons in an atom reduces the effective attraction of the nucleus on the outer electrons, essentially causing the inner electrons to "shield" part of the nuclear charge. This is called the shielding effect. The magnitude of the shielding effect between electrons can be approximately expressed by the shielding coefficient.
